Fri, August 11, 2006 - 3:05 PMHumankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect.

...on the purpose of life... Kind of long, but worth it
Tue, August 15, 2006 - 6:31 AM
The Invitation
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living
I want to know what you ache for,
And if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love,
For your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon.
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow,
If you have been opened by life's betrayals or
Have shrivelled and closed from fear or further pain
I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own;
If you can dance with wilderness and let ecstasy fill you
To the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful,
Be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself,
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.
I want to know if you can see beauty
Even when it is not pretty every day,
And if you can source your life from God's presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine,
And still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes!"
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair,
Weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children
It doesn't interest me who you are, how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the Fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself,
And if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

Re: ...on the purpose of life...
Wed, August 2, 2006 - 4:20 PMShakespeare writes about himself and his purpose in life in the play 'King John' he has Faulconbridge say this (in part) :
'But from the inward motion to deliver
Sweet, sweet , sweet poison for the age's tooth:
Which, although I will not practise to deceive,
Yet, to avoid deceit, I mean to learn'.

“He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.”
–Bessie Anderson Stanley
(This is the original version that according to her great-granddaughter, Bethanne Larson, was written as the winning entry in a contest run by Brown Book Magazine in 1904. Bessie won a cash prize of $250, which paid off the mortgage on the house, among other things. It was included in Bartlett's Book of Quotations for decades, and if you can find an old edition from the 30's or 40's, it should be in there. Derivations are often attributed to Emerson, Longfellow and others.)

Sun, July 29, 2007 - 11:37 PMNo quotes here, sorry.
Life should have more happy moments than sad, moresweetness thn bitterness, no regrets, and peace withinoneself. Yes, I know all daisy-chains and whatnot. The purpose is to find youe passion(s), pusue them, be good to you fellow man, and be happy and thankful for every new day that dawns.
Al least that's what my purpose in life is...

Re: ...on the purpose of life...
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 4:38 PMWm Shakespeare had his most famous character utter these lines whic to me sum up the purpose off life. That they were concerning the fact that this character was contemplating suicide was just part of what Shakespeare was saying and that he the character say it in ten words was testament to his greatness.
Hamlet says "To be , or not, to be, that is the question"
